Officer Secondary College Instrumental Music Program
We extend a warm welcome to an exciting opportunity of music-making at Officer Secondary College! Whether you’re picking up your instrument for the first time or continuing your journey, we’re thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant instrumental music community.
Our program is built on creativity, collaboration, and commitment. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to grow as a musician, perform in ensembles, and develop friendships that last a lifetime.
We offer a range of ensembles and lessons tailored to different instruments and skill levels, guided by passionate staff who are dedicated to helping you reach your full potential.
Being part of the music program means more than just learning notes and rhythms — it’s about expression, teamwork, and becoming part of something bigger than yourself. We encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity: rehearsals, performances, workshops, and community events.

Our Vision
The Instrumental Music Program aims to inspire and nurture students’ musical talents through high-quality instruction, fostering a lifelong appreciation of music. We strive to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and excellence in performance. Our program supports students in developing technical proficiency, musical literacy, and confidence, preparing them for individual and ensemble success
Our mission is to engage students through high-quality instruction across a variety of instrumental disciplines, including concert bands, string ensembles, contemporary ensembles, guitar, piano, percussion, and vocal groups.
We are committed to:
- Fostering technical proficiency – ensuring students build a strong foundation in instrumental technique, practice habits, and performance skills tailored to their instrument.
- Developing musical literacy – teaching students to read, interpret, and understand music through structured lessons and ensemble rehearsals.
- Encouraging creative expression – providing opportunities for students to explore creativity through improvisation, composition, and stylistic interpretation.
Promoting collaboration – emphasising the importance of teamwork and communication in both large and small ensemble settings. - Cultivating confidence and leadership – supporting students as they build self-esteem, take musical initiative, and develop leadership skills through performance and mentorship roles.
- Celebrating diversity and inclusion – welcoming students from all backgrounds and experience levels, and embracing a broad range of musical styles and traditions.
- Connecting with community – offering meaningful performance experiences within the college and the wider community, reinforcing the role of music as a unifying and expressive force.
Through these goals, we aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation of music and equip students with the tools to succeed as confident performers, thoughtful listeners, and passionate learners.
Program Overview
Upon enrolment into the music program at Officer Secondary College, we will ensure that students receive a musical experience that is tailored to their abilities and builds on their personal interests. Students have the opportunity to learn and be supported with their choice of instrument and will develop skills and confidence along the way to enable them to perform for their peers and their community. All fundamental music skills will be taught within a supported environment, allowing students to flourish according to their own unique abilities.
A thoughtful and well-planned approach to music curriculum drives our program, providing an excellent foundation for students to pursue future musical pathways such as AMEB and VCE/VET.
It is also our intention to build a positive, vibrant and inclusive music culture at Officer Secondary College. Ensembles are an integral part of this. Weekly ensembles and semester performances are a strong feature of the program, and this provides students with the opportunity to learn the art of performance, and the skills beyond that learnt as a soloist. Ensembles are also a fun and social way to help students to develop teamwork skills. All students receiving instrumental tuition are supported in finding an ensemble that is suited to them and their chosen instrument.ionate learners.
